Window Cleaning for Carlton homes

Bay-fronted semis on a standard exterior rota, and terraces on Carlton Hill where the traffic grit shortens it. The bays hold more dust on the sill than anywhere else in the property.

Front and back need different rotas in Carlton and we price them that way. The front elevations on and around Carlton Hill face a bus route, and the traffic film that leaves on glass is oily rather than dusty, so it bonds and it returns on roughly a four week cycle. The rear of the same terrace, facing a yard and an entry, holds up comfortably at eight. The interwar semis toward Gedling are more even and sit on a standard rota front and back. Reaching the rear is the other question on a terrace, since the entry is often gated and locked, and we need to know who holds that key before the first visit rather than on the morning.

Carlton sits in NG4, under Gedling Borough Council. The housing here is mostly Victorian terraces along Carlton Hill and interwar semis spreading north toward Gedling, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on Carlton window cleaning jobs

Traffic film needs a detergent stage, not purified water alone. On a front elevation over a bus route we wash first to break the oily layer and then rinse with pure water so it dries without spotting, which is a slower job than the rear of the same house. Bay fronts, common along the hill, add a third more glass than a flat frontage and three sills instead of one. Sills below a road facing window also collect a black gritty deposit in the corners that wants brushing out before anything wet, or it just smears across the paintwork.

How a Carlton window cleaning job actually runs

The back of a hill terrace is rarely a flat wall. There is usually a two storey rear addition with a lower roof over the kitchen, which leaves one or two first floor windows sitting above that roof rather than above open ground. A water fed pole reaches them from the yard at an angle, and that is the correct way to do it, because nobody should be standing on a kitchen roof built to keep rain out rather than carry a person. On the semis the same problem appears over a side garage or a flat roofed utility. Interiors are a separate visit and a different job, and in this stock they are worth two or three times a year rather than once, since a small kitchen with a gas hob and a weak extractor lays a cooking film on the inside of the kitchen and back bedroom glass that never appears at the front of the house. We book interior work for when somebody is home, which in practice means a weekend or an evening in the lighter half of the year.

Who books it here

The local reference points are Carlton Hill, Colwick Woods and Carlton Square, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.

We run Carlton on the same round as Mapperley, Sneinton and Arnold.

What we check on every Carlton job

Frames and fittings rather than glass alone. The drainage slots along the bottom of a uPVC frame, which block with grit and then let water stand in the chamber until it finds a way inside, and which clear with a thin brush. Trickle vents, which fill with the same road grit and quietly stop working. The outer gasket where it has shrunk back at a corner, which we note and leave rather than force. Leaded and coloured glass in a stair window or a front door light, common in the semis: soapy water and a soft cloth, no blade anywhere near the lead and nothing alkaline on it. Green algae on north facing frames and sill returns, which lifts with a brush and detergent and comes back faster than ordinary dirt. Where a sealed unit has misted between the panes we report it and stop, because the seal has failed and nothing external reaches it.

What the window cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Interior: Internal glazed doors, mirrors and glass partitions
  • Exterior: No ladders, so no access needed through the house in most cases
  • Also: Hard water spotting treated as limescale rather than scrubbed
  • Interior: Frame, sill and track dusted and vacuumed first, so you are not making mud

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full window cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What window cleaning costs in Carlton

Exterior glass on a rota. Interiors are charged separately and need access. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

PropertyTypical per visit
Terraced house£12 to £20
Semi-detached£15 to £28
Detached£25 to £45
Interiors, added to a visitRoughly half again
Commercial frontageQuoted on frequency

The first clean of glass that has been left costs more than the ones after it, which is why a rota works out cheaper than an annual rescue.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Conservatory roofQuoted after seeing it
First clean of neglected glassHigher than the rota price

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Questions

Window Cleaningin Carlton

Ring us on 07438 843980, or see the full service page.

Can you do the front more often than the back?

Yes, and on Carlton Hill it usually makes sense. Fronts on a four week rota, the rear on eight, with interiors booked separately a couple of times a year. It costs less than putting the whole property on the shorter cycle and it puts the frequency on the elevation that actually needs it.

How do you reach the back of a terrace?

Through the entry where there is one, which means the gate key or the code has to be arranged in advance. If the entry is blocked or there is no rear access at all, we can bring the pole through the house with someone present, or clean the rear on visits when you are home. Either works, but it needs agreeing rather than discovering.

There is a kitchen roof under our back bedroom window. How do you reach it?

From the ground with a pole, angled in over the roof. Those rear addition roofs are usually felt or a thin sheet on light timbers, and they are not designed to be walked on, so nothing and nobody goes up there. It takes a little longer than a clear elevation and occasionally leaves the very bottom corner of the frame beyond reach, which we will point out rather than leave you to notice.

Our stair window has leaded coloured glass. Is it safe to clean?

Yes, with the right approach. Warm water, a mild detergent and a soft cloth, worked panel by panel and dried gently. No blade, no abrasive pad and nothing strongly alkaline, because the lead came oxidises and the cement in the joints is often original and brittle. If a panel is bowing or a joint has opened, we will show you rather than press on it, since that is leaded light repair and a specialist job.

Do you cover the whole of Carlton?

Yes, all of NG4 and the surrounding streets, under Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does window cleaning cost in Carlton?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of windows, how many storeys, and whether interiors are included with the exterior rota. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start window cleaning in Carlton?

Within a fortnight to join the rota, and the first clean of neglected glass takes longer than the ones after it. On-street, usually available, and we group Carlton with Mapperley, Sneinton and Arnold on the rota.
