Deep Cleaning for Carlton homes
Interwar semis on an annual reset, and terraces along Carlton Hill being brought back after a tenancy. The kitchen carries most of it in both cases, and the oven carries most of the kitchen.
A deep clean in a Carlton semi usually has one feature the city stock does not: an original tiled fireplace still sitting in the chimney breast in the front room. The good news is that those tiles are ceramic rather than stone, so they take normal cleaning without the acid worries that stop us in the older village properties. The gap behind and beneath a gas fire fitted into that opening is the part nobody has touched, and it holds soot, dust and whatever came down the flue. In the rented terraces along the hill a deep clean is more often a catch up than a maintenance job, because a property let for years accumulates in the same places every time.
Carlton sits in NG4, under Gedling Borough Council. The housing here is mostly Victorian terraces along Carlton Hill and interwar semis spreading north toward Gedling, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.
What we run into on Carlton deep cleaning jobs
Where the chimney is open behind a decorative cover, or the fire is a gas one sitting in a builder's opening, soot drops onto the hearth and the carpet in front of it in small amounts all year round. People blame the cleaning. It is the flue. We clean the hearth, the tiles and the surround, and we will point out where the deposit is arriving from, but we do not remove a fire or work up a chimney. Where a cover has been taken off and the opening left bare, a proper cap or register plate stops it at source.
How a Carlton deep cleaning job actually runs
Order on a deep clean day is set by soaking time, so the first ten minutes are spent starting things rather than finishing them. Degreaser goes into the oven cavity and a descaler bag goes onto the shower head, because the water here is hard and scale on a shower rose needs contact time rather than effort. While those sit we take the kitchen apart: extractor filter out and into the sink, cupboard doors open, the plinth off where it is a clip fit so the gap underneath can be vacuumed. Bathrooms in the semis are small and tiled to about chest height, with narrow grout lines and a boxed section hiding the soil pipe and cistern, and the top of that boxing is a horizontal shelf at eye level that no weekly clean has ever touched. In a terrace the kitchen is usually a rear addition with a lower ceiling, which puts the wall cupboards and the hood closer to the hob and means the grease film reaches the ceiling itself. That ceiling is part of the job here rather than an extra.
Who books it here
A lot of the terraced stock is rented, so end of tenancy and landlord turnarounds sit alongside the regular domestic work.
We run Carlton on the same round as Mapperley, Sneinton and Arnold.
What we check on every Carlton job
Named items we get into. Oven door glass, which on most doors is two panes with a gap that fills with brown carbon and which comes apart at the hinge screws on a lot of models rather than being written off. Metal mesh filters go through a hot degreaser soak, and where the filter is a charcoal cartridge it cannot be washed and needs replacing, which we say rather than pretend. The bottom seal on a shower screen lifts out of its channel, and the black growth is underneath it, not on the glass. Tap aerators unscrew and hold scale. The fins on older panel radiators hold a felt of dust that a brush only pushes further in, so it comes out with a long crevice tool. Sealant that has gone mouldy inside the silicone is identified as failed rather than scrubbed, because scrubbing it spreads the growth and achieves nothing.
What the deep cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- Everywhere else: High level dust: light fittings, door tops, picture rails, coving
- Everywhere else: Window interiors, sills, frames and the tracks they run in
- Kitchen, which is about 40% of the time: Oven interior, racks, side runners, door glass and grill pan
- Kitchen, which is about 40% of the time: Inside, on top of and underneath all cupboards
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full deep cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What deep cleaning costs in Carlton
A one-off deep clean, priced as a job rather than by the hour. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
| Property | Typical one-off |
|---|---|
| Studio | £110 to £180 |
| 1 bedroom | £135 to £220 |
| 2 bedrooms | £165 to £280 |
| 3 bedrooms | £220 to £350 |
| 4 bedrooms | £300 to £460 |
Our cost research puts a one-off deep clean of a two to three bedroom home at £165 to £350, which is the anchor the rest of this table is built around.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Single oven deep clean | £45 to £80 |
| Double oven | £70 to £110 |
| Range cooker | £80 to £130 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
Can you clean our tiled fireplace?
Yes. Carlton fireplace tiles are almost always glazed ceramic, so a pH neutral cleaner and a soft brush in the joints brings them back with no risk. What we avoid is anything abrasive on the glaze and anything acidic on a cast iron or slate hearth if that is what sits in front of it. Send a photograph when you book if you are unsure which you have.
Why is there always dust on the hearth?
Almost always the flue rather than the room. An open or badly capped chimney drops fine soot onto the hearth and the carpet in front of it continuously, and it reappears within days of any clean. We will tell you if that is what we are seeing. Capping it properly fixes it permanently, and it is a job for a sweep rather than a cleaner.
Our bath has a boxed-in panel. Will you clean behind it?
If it is a clip-in or screwed panel that comes away without force, yes, and it goes straight back. If it has been tiled in or sealed to the floor it stays where it is, because taking it out is building work and putting it back badly causes a leak nobody notices for a month. Tell us which you have when you book and we will allow the time or not.
The kitchen ceiling above the hob has gone yellow. Will a deep clean shift it?
It depends what caused it. Cooking grease over years yellows emulsion and comes back most of the way with a degreaser and a lot of patience, which is why we do that ceiling in a low terrace kitchen. Nicotine staining is different: it bleeds back through as soon as it dries, and the only real fix is a stain blocking primer and repainting. We will tell you which one you have got before we start on it.
Do you cover the whole of Carlton?
Yes, all of NG4 and the surrounding streets, under Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does deep cleaning cost in Carlton?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is how long it has been since the last one, the state of the oven, and how many bathrooms need descaling. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start deep cleaning in Carlton?
Within a week or two normally, longer in March and April and through November when everyone books at once. On-street, usually available, and we group Carlton with Mapperley, Sneinton and Arnold on the rota.
