Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning for Wollaton homes
1930s semis with original parquet under carpet in a fair number of cases. That changes what we can do with moisture, so we check what is under the carpet before we start rather than after.
Two things drive carpet work in Wollaton: the park and the age of the floors. Houses backing onto the deer park take in more mud, grass and leaf matter than anywhere else we cover, and it lands in a traffic lane from the back door through the kitchen and into the hall. The carpets themselves are often good wool twist rather than budget polypropylene, which cleans beautifully and punishes over wetting. Upholstery in a bay window is the other regular, because forty years of direct light through five panes does things to fabric on one side of a sofa that never happen on the other.
Wollaton sits in NG8, under Nottingham City Council. The housing here is mostly 1930s bay-fronted semis and detached houses, with larger properties backing onto the park, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.
What we run into on Wollaton carpet & upholstery cleaning jobs
The genuine risk in these houses is what is underneath. Where original wood block survives beneath a fitted carpet, hot water extraction at a normal rate can push moisture through carpet and underlay into the bitumen bed, which softens, stains upward and can lift blocks at the edges. Before we extract a ground floor room in a 1930s Wollaton semi we lift a corner and look. If there is parquet under there, the water rate comes down, the drying passes double, and we say so rather than finding out afterwards.
How a Wollaton carpet & upholstery cleaning job actually runs
The hall, stairs and landing run is the job in most of these houses and it is the slowest part of the visit. The staircase turns, usually with three or four winders at the bottom, and a winder cannot be done with a standard wand because there is no straight pull anywhere on the tread. It is hand tool work, tread by tread and riser by riser, and the landing at the top is a small square that four doorways feed onto. Access helps: the van stands on the drive and the hose runs in through the front door, so nothing trails across a pavement or a shared entry. Drying is easier here than almost anywhere we work, because a front door and a set of rear glazed doors give a through draught the full depth of the house, and half an hour of that with air movers beats an afternoon of shut windows. The bookings sit in spring, once the wet months are behind and there is no sense cleaning a carpet that is about to take another six weeks of mud off the fields.
Who books it here
Family homes, and more glass than anywhere else on our patch. Conservatories, French doors and large bay windows mean interior window cleaning is booked here far more often than average.
We run Wollaton on the same round as Bilborough, Beeston and The Park Estate.
What we check on every Wollaton job
Two findings recur in these houses, and both get looked for before anything wet goes down. The first is carpet moth. Wool that has sat undisturbed under a sofa or along a skirting run for years gets grazed by the larvae, and the result is a thin patch with the backing showing through that people read as wear. Wear happens where feet go. Loss in the quietest corner of a room is moth, and no amount of cleaning brings the fibre back. The second is old crumb rubber underlay, which powders with age and rises through the seams as a grey dust the moment the pile is agitated. Conservatory suites are a separate item again: cane and rattan frames are not wet cleaned at all, so the loose cushions are treated on their own care code and the frame is vacuumed out and wiped dry.
What the carpet & upholstery cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- Also covered: Pet urine, with enzymatic pre-treatment and extra dwell time
- Carpets: Pre-spray suited to the soiling, with proper dwell time
- Carpets: Neutralising rinse, so no sticky detergent residue is left to attract soil
- Upholstery: Vacuumed with an upholstery tool, including down the sides and under cushions
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full carpet & upholstery cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What carpet & upholstery cleaning costs in Wollaton
Hot water extraction, priced by room or by property. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
| Property | Typical one-off |
|---|---|
| Minimum call-out | £60 to £90 |
| Single room | £35 to £60 |
| Hallway, stairs and landing | £45 to £85 |
| 2 bed flat, throughout | £75 to £175 |
| 3 bed house, throughout | £140 to £260 |
| 4 bed house, throughout | £200 to £350 |
Stairs are priced separately from rooms because they are slow and cannot be done with a standard wand.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Upholstery, 3 seat sofa | £45 to £90 |
| Mattress clean | £30 to £60 |
| Pet urine treatment, per spot | £15 to £40 |
| Rug, per square metre | £8 to £20 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

There are wood blocks under our lounge carpet. Is extraction still safe?
With adjustments, yes. We reduce the water going down, increase the number of dry passes and put air movement in the room straight away, so the carpet is damp rather than wet and nothing reaches the bitumen bed. What we will not do is a normal deep extraction over parquet without telling you. If the blocks are already loose in places, the sensible answer is to clean the carpet somewhere else or not at all.
Can you get park mud out of a wool stair carpet?
Usually, and wool helps here because the fibre releases soil well when it is treated properly. The trick is letting the mud dry completely and vacuuming it out before any water goes near it. Wet mud worked into wool with a machine turns into a stain rather than lifting. If the traffic lane has been walked for years there may be some permanent shading, which is wear rather than dirt.
There are thin patches under the sofa but the rest of the carpet looks fine. Can you clean those out?
Cleaning will not restore them, and it is worth knowing that before you book. Fibre loss in the least walked part of a wool carpet is nearly always carpet moth rather than wear, and the pile has gone rather than being flattened or soiled. What cleaning does achieve is removing the eggs, the larval casings and the debris they feed on, which stops it spreading along the skirting. Moving furniture regularly does more than any product.
Can the winder treads at the bottom of the stairs actually be cleaned properly?
Yes, with a hand tool rather than the wand, and it is worth allowing the time. A winder has no straight run, so the soil comes up in short overlapping passes across a wedge shaped tread with the riser done separately. That corner is also where the traffic of the whole house turns, so it is the dirtiest part of the staircase and the part where the difference shows most once it is dry.
Do you cover the whole of Wollaton?
Yes, all of NG8 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does carpet & upholstery cleaning cost in Wollaton?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the room count, whether stairs are included, the fibre type, and whether there is pet urine to treat. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start carpet & upholstery cleaning in Wollaton?
Within a week usually, and we would rather do it alongside a deep clean than as a separate visit. Drives on most properties, and we group Wollaton with Bilborough, Beeston and The Park Estate on the rota.
