Domestic Cleaning for Mapperley homes

Split-level houses on the hill with long internal flights, so the stairs are a real part of the job rather than an afterthought. Worth mentioning if there is a long climb from the pavement, because it changes what we bring.

A regular clean in Mapperley is planned around vertical distance rather than floor area. Houses on the hill run to three usable levels more often than not, and the vacuum, the caddy and the mop all have to travel between them. We work a level at a time and finish downward, because carrying dirty water up a long flight to a half landing bathroom wastes more of a visit than any other habit. The stairs get a proper pass every time here, not a quick run over the middle of the tread, since the whole household funnels through that one route. Grit walked up from the steeper streets is abrasive, so the first metre inside the front door does more damage to a carpet than the rest of the room put together.

Mapperley sits in NG3, under Nottingham City Council and Gedling Borough Council. Regular domestic work in the interwar semis, and carpet cleaning more often than average, because the hill means more grit walked in and stair carpets that take the brunt of it.

What we run into on Mapperley domestic cleaning jobs

A fair number of front doors on the hill sit above the pavement at the top of their own external flight, usually stone or concrete with a handrail. Those steps hold moss and loose grit through autumn and it comes straight in on shoes, which is why a barrier mat inside the door earns its keep here more than in a flat fronted street. We also ask which door you want us to use. On a split level the side or lower entrance can put us on the wrong side of the house from the kitchen, and that adds a lap of the stairs to every trip we make during the visit.

How a Mapperley domestic cleaning job actually runs

The set up matters more than usual on a hill. We park on the nearest level side road rather than leaving a loaded van nose down on a gradient, and everything for the visit comes in on one carry, because a second trip back out to the kerb costs several minutes each way once there are steps in the way. In a house on three usable levels we keep a small second vacuum upstairs between visits where there is somewhere sensible to put it, and that one change buys back more time than anything else we do. The rota conversation is different here too. A house with a bathroom on two of its levels has more rooms than its floor area suggests, so we agree at the outset which rooms are done every visit and which alternate, rather than quietly running short and leaving the top of the house thin. Winter changes the ground floor. The steep roads get gritted, salt comes in on shoes and dries as a white bloom on hard flooring, and it wants rinsing off rather than wiping around.

Who books it here

On the practical side: Steep streets and some properties well above road level. Worth telling us if there is a long flight up from the pavement, since it changes how we plan the equipment.

We run Mapperley on the same round as Sherwood, Carlton and Sneinton.

What we check on every Mapperley job

Things we check on a regular visit in a house shaped like this: the handrail and the spindles, including the underside of the rail where hands actually grip; the newel cap, which collects everything anybody sets down on it; the two way switches at the top and bottom of each flight, touched more often than any other switch in the property; the landing radiator and the wall above it, which shows a grey plume once it has been missed a few times; and the threshold strips between levels, where a change of floor covering traps dust in the join. In the interwar semis toward Porchester we also take in the tiled hearth and the door bottoms. If clean linen is left out we change beds on whichever level they sit on, and everything used comes down in a single load at the end of the visit rather than a bag per room.

What the domestic cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Kitchen: Floor swept and mopped
  • Kitchen: Hob and splashback exterior
  • Bedrooms and living areas: Hard floors mopped
  • Bedrooms and living areas: Beds made, or changed if clean linen is left out

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full domestic cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

The cleaner who comes to your Mapperley property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 8.

What domestic cleaning costs in Mapperley

Regular domestic cleaning, per visit, at a typical company rate. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

PropertyTypical per visit
1 bed flat£40 to £50
2 bed£50 to £70
3 bed£60 to £80
4 bed£80 to £100
5 bed£100 to £120

A fortnightly clean of a two bedroom home works out around £1,560 to £1,820 a year. Weekly is roughly double.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Regular domestic, per hour£17 to £25
Ironing, per hour£14 to £20

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Our house is up a flight of steps from the road. Does that affect the booking?

Not the price, but tell us anyway. It changes what we bring in one trip and where we set the caddy down, and it means we plan the visit so nothing has to go back to the van halfway through. If there is a handrail, or the steps get slippery in frost, mention that as well and we will allow for it.

Do you clean the stairs on every visit?

Yes. A vacuum pass over the treads and the edges, plus the spindles and the handrail, which are touched constantly and hardly ever wiped. What a regular visit does not include is wet cleaning the stair carpet itself. That is hot water extraction and it is booked separately, because a stair run here carries the wear of the whole house.

We have three floors but the house is not large. How do the hours work?

By room count and by the number of flights, not by floor area. A hill house with a bathroom on two levels, a small room in the roof and two flights between them takes longer than a flat property of the same size, because the kit travels further and there are more doorways, skirtings and thresholds to work. We would rather set the hours honestly at the start and cover the whole property than fit a standard slot and leave the top level short every time.

Does the winter grit off the hill roads damage our floors?

It is more nuisance than hazard on most surfaces, but it does two things worth knowing. Grit is abrasive underfoot and grinds into a hall carpet or a wood finish every time somebody walks over it, and dried road salt leaves a pale bloom on tile and vinyl that a damp cloth smears rather than lifts. Through the cold months we rinse the first stretch of hard floor instead of mopping it in place, and a coarse mat at the door catches most of it.

Do you cover the whole of Mapperley?

Yes, all of NG3 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council and Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does domestic cleaning cost in Mapperley?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the bathroom count more than the bedroom count, how often we come, and whether there are pets. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start domestic cleaning in Mapperley?

Usually within a week for a regular rota, and we will tell you the day rather than a window. Steep streets and some properties well above road level, and we group Mapperley with Sherwood, Carlton and Sneinton on the rota.
