Window Cleaning for Ruddington homes
Small period windows that let in less light to begin with, so a film on the inside of the glass costs you proportionally more of it. Interiors twice a year makes a visible difference in a cottage.
Cottage windows are small, and that is the whole argument for cleaning them properly. A modern semi with a wide opening tolerates a film on the inside of the glass because plenty of light is coming through regardless. A framework knitters' cottage with a small casement and a deep reveal does not, and through a Nottinghamshire winter the difference between clean and filmed glass is the difference between reaching for a lamp at three in the afternoon and not. Wood burners feed that film too, leaving a fine deposit on the inside of the panes that household spray tends to smear rather than lift.
Ruddington sits in NG11, under Rushcliffe Borough Council. The housing here is mostly framework knitters' cottages around the village centre, interwar and modern housing on the edges, several period properties, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.
What we run into on Ruddington window cleaning jobs
The frames need a lighter touch than the glass. Older timber casements often have putty beading rather than a rubber gasket, and putty that has hardened and shrunk does not enjoy being soaked or scraped, so we work drier around it and keep a blade away from the edges entirely. Stone sills are porous and stay wet longer, which is why the north facing ones in the sheltered part of the village grow green algae faster than the exposed elevations do. Those get treated as a growth rather than as dirt, then rinsed properly.
How a Ruddington window cleaning job actually runs
Access to the back of a cottage is the thing to settle before a first visit. A row built onto the pavement has no side gate, so the rear elevation is reached either through the house or along the passage serving the row, and where neither is possible the back windows need somebody at home. That is worth knowing at the booking rather than on the doorstep. At the front the pole works off the footway, and a cottage set tight against a boundary wall or under a low overhanging eaves gives less room to get an angle on the top panes than a modern elevation does. Time here is counted per pane rather than per window. A casement split into six or eight small lights has several times the edge and bar work of a single sheet, so a frontage with three of them is not a quick job even though the glass area is small. The rota can run longer than a main road property, but late summer puts a field dust on the glass that a town house never sees.
Who books it here
The local reference points are Rushcliffe Country Park, the Framework Knitters Museum and the village green, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.
We run Ruddington on the same round as West Bridgford, Clifton and Keyworth.
What we check on every Ruddington job
We work the reveal before the glass so nothing dirty runs down onto what sits below it. That matters where a cottage is limewashed or lime rendered, because dirty run off streaks the surface and the streak stays visible long after the glass has dried. The stone cill gets checked for its drip groove, the slot underneath that throws water clear of the wall, since a groove packed with moss lets water track back instead. On leaded or small pane windows the cames and the putty around each quarry are worked around rather than over, with no blade and no pressure at the joints. Peg stays and their holes, the hinge knuckles and the trickle vent flaps are done while the frames are open. Fly screens, where a property has them, come out and get rinsed separately, because washing one in place pushes what is in it straight through onto the inside of the glass.
What the window cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- Interior: Internal glazed doors, mirrors and glass partitions
- Exterior: No ladders, so no access needed through the house in most cases
- Also: Hard water spotting treated as limescale rather than scrubbed
- Interior: Frame, sill and track dusted and vacuumed first, so you are not making mud
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full window cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
The cleaner who comes to your Ruddington property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 8.
What window cleaning costs in Ruddington
Exterior glass on a rota. Interiors are charged separately and need access. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
| Property | Typical per visit |
|---|---|
| Terraced house | £12 to £20 |
| Semi-detached | £15 to £28 |
| Detached | £25 to £45 |
| Interiors, added to a visit | Roughly half again |
| Commercial frontage | Quoted on frequency |
The first clean of glass that has been left costs more than the ones after it, which is why a rota works out cheaper than an annual rescue.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Conservatory roof | Quoted after seeing it |
| First clean of neglected glass | Higher than the rota price |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
Our windows are original timber. Is a pole system safe on them?
Yes, with the pressure and the brush chosen for the frame rather than for speed. Purified water and a soft brush do no harm to sound paint or intact putty. Where the putty has already cracked and lifted we work around it and tell you, because pushing water into a failed bead puts it behind the glass instead of taking dirt off the front.
When is the best time to have the insides done?
Late winter and early spring, and in a cottage more than anywhere else. Daylight is scarce, the windows are small and a season of stove use has left a deposit on the inside of the glass. Doing the interiors once in February and again in late summer suits most Ruddington cottages better than one annual clean at an arbitrary point in the year.
There is no way round the back. How do you do the rear windows?
Through the house, along the shared passage if the row has one, or by appointment when somebody is in. Most cottage rows here have no side gate, so it is worth deciding once and writing it into the arrangement rather than solving it on every visit. Where the back can only be reached with you at home, we do the front on the normal rota and pair the rear elevation with a visit you are there for, which is the usual compromise.
We have secondary glazing. What happens to the gap between the two?
It collects dust and flies, and it is a separate job from cleaning the glass. Secondary panels tend to be fitted for warmth or noise where the original windows have to stay, and the cavity between them is sealed enough to trap what gets in and not sealed enough to keep it out. Opening the panels, cleaning both inner faces and vacuuming out the sill inside the cavity needs somebody at home and some care with the fixings.
Do you cover the whole of Ruddington?
Yes, all of NG11 and the surrounding streets, under Rushcliffe Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does window cleaning cost in Ruddington?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the number of windows, how many storeys, and whether interiors are included with the exterior rota. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start window cleaning in Ruddington?
Within a fortnight to join the rota, and the first clean of neglected glass takes longer than the ones after it. Village centre parking is limited around the green, and we group Ruddington with West Bridgford, Clifton and Keyworth on the rota.
